Minnesota State Sales Tax Info

Did you know that you can get a full rebate on every purchase you make for production equipment?
You can and it is legal! The State of Minnesota defines production equipment as items used to produce
photographic images. This can mean cameras, lights, software, and computers. It does not include any
equipment used for office or administration purposes. Learn more about this valuable option for your
business. Talk to your favorite accountant or go to the State of Minnesota Sales Tax site and download
the pdf. You might also want to refer to Fact Sheet #103

You can take advantage of this if you deliver your files in a physical, tangible format such as film, CD,
or DVDs. Not electronically. You also have to be charging your clients sales tax, so this will not work if all
your work is for advertising agencies that are using the images for advertising, no sales tax charge.
When in doubt check with your accountant or the state. You might also want to refer to Fact Sheets
then click on sales tax and go to download #169 it is very useful on what to charge and what to expect
for rebates.

If you'd like an Excel version of the spreadsheet you‘ll need use to record the purchases click here.
You do not have to use this Excel version. The State will provide you with a paper version.

The process is not overly difficult although a little time consuming the first time you file, but it is well
worth it and you may be surprised how much money you have got coming to you. Go for it!
